Millions Turn to Digital GP Appointments Amid NHS Struggles

A growing number of people in the UK are turning to online healthcare services as frustration with long NHS wait times continues to rise. With 7.46 million NHS appointments delayed and GP access topping the list of patient concerns, digital healthcare is emerging as a popular alternative.

New data reveals that 15 million people in the UK – roughly 28% of the population – had an online GP consultation in the past year, signalling a significant shift toward virtual healthcare. Additionally, more than 29 million rely on online services for repeat prescriptions, and two million have opted for private digital GP appointments.

This growing demand for virtual healthcare is being driven by dissatisfaction with traditional GP access. Nearly two-thirds (64%) of Brits report frustration over long waiting times, while half (51%) say they prefer virtual consultations because they save time. A further 45% believe online services make it easier to access treatment when they need it.

Generational Shift Toward Digital Healthcare

Younger generations, particularly Gen Z and Millennials, are leading the shift toward digital healthcare, with 15% opting for private virtual GP consultations. This tech-savvy demographic is drawn to the convenience and flexibility of on-demand care, which bypasses lengthy NHS queues.

However, the rise of online healthcare has not come without controversy. NHS GPs have raised concerns about a government contract requiring them to keep online consultation tools open during working hours, arguing that it adds to their workload at a time when NHS resources are already stretched thin.

Affordability: A Barrier for Many

While demand for digital healthcare is clear, cost remains a significant barrier. Although two in five (40%) people would consider using online healthcare if it were more affordable, only 27% are currently willing to pay for a virtual GP appointment. This highlights an ongoing challenge: making digital healthcare both accessible and affordable for the wider population.

AI in Healthcare: A Double-Edged Sword

Another key concern raised by the data is the growing role of artificial intelligence (AI) in healthcare. While AI has the potential to streamline processes and improve diagnostics, it hasn’t yet earned the trust of the public. Only 18% of people say they would feel comfortable receiving a diagnosis from an AI system, and 61% fear that AI is replacing doctors too quickly.

A Changing Healthcare Landscape

The shift toward digital GP services reflects deeper issues within the UK healthcare system, as patients seek faster and more convenient ways to access care. Yet, the challenge of balancing innovation with affordability, trust, and sustainability remains.

As NHS waitlists grow and private healthcare options expand, the future of healthcare seems poised to evolve – with digital and virtual services playing an increasingly central role. However, the key to success may lie not just in offering more options, but it’s about making sure that option actually works for them: on-demand, doctor-led digital care which is affordable, accessible, and transparent.
